Welcome to the Year of the Boar!

Happy New Year! Welcome to the Year of the Boar.
Yes, I do mean the Chinese New Year. The Chinese New Year is based on the lunar year, unlike our US new Year which is based on the solar calendar. My children decided to start studying Chinese New Year a few weeks ago. We are still finding new things about it, and NOW I'm getting requests to start learning the language! Ah, the adventures of unschooling!
Well, Nian (the last remaining monster on Earth) obviously came to terrorize us the last week or so before the new year, because nothing got done! But, we managed to scare off Nian, and now are progressing forward with our celebrations and vowing to finish our research so we can celebrate more fully next year.
But meanwhile, we have brought a few pigs (boars) into our house decorations, with the intention to attract the good luck of the boar this year. The children are still working on the paper cuts, and will continue adding to the paper lanterns.
So I will leave you today with a wish for a happy and prosperous year, and a hearty "Gung Ho Phat Choy!" (Happy New Year!)
