Colorado River in Needles, CA

We have been lucky enough to find time to get over to the playground and the Colorado river a bunch lately. The high temperatures have been in the middle to upper 70s this last week, prompting us to spend our time outside while the days are nice. The massive amount of rain we have seen has left everything a little bit soggy though. I haven't been writing a whole lot lately, at least not here, but I have had the camera out for a good amount of time. I thought I would share what we have been spending our time doing lately.

Looking toward the Colorado River.JPGThis is the view as we go to our favorite spot on the beach. This part of the river isn't visited as often, but I don't understand why not. It is so peaceful. You are looking at the junction to a small stream of water running into the Colorado river. We like to think of it as our own private beach, but we have identified tracks from other people and their dogs. Luckily, the other people who visit this spot are considerate enough to leave it looking like they found it.

Back River Path.JPGAnd here is the view looking back up the small stream. The first time we saw this, we were hooked. One of these days we will probably just disappear back into that grass, but the water is still a little bit cold for that right now. The bank gets too overgrown to walk on, and we would have to take to the water to get much further. It is an adventure we look forward to!

our favorite spot of the river.JPGWe also keep looking across the water. Those tall marshy grasses are probably home to some forgotten wildlife. We would love to wade across and go looking into the grass. The water runs so clear, and we can see right into the base of the grass. We have spent quite a bit of time talking about what kind of creatures might make that their home. We have also been trying to guess how much farther over the water goes... there are birds that land not too far away from us on the other side. And the tree line is a good indicator of where dry land must be!

Alex at river bank.JPGThis is one of those places that makes you just stop and take the time to smell the proverbial roses. Little A has always been so drawn to water. Sometimes he just sits at the edge of the water and you can just see how much he longs to dive in. When he grows up, I would not be surprised to find him studying life in the water, although he seems to show no favoritism to fresh water or saltwater. He just loves all water!

Happy Fairtrade Fortnight!

Okay, so this is not a holiday that we celebrate here in the United States, but maybe we should! The Fairtrade fortnight is about raising awareness of  fairtrade products for both the retailers and the consumers.

Wikipedia.com has this description of Fairtrade fortnight :
"The Fairtrade fortnight is an annual event in which fair and ethical trading values are celebrated. The concept was pioneered by the Fairtrade Foundation in the United Kingdom, and held firstly in 1997 in Scotland. This turned out to be a highly successful campaign to get every supermarket throughout Scotland to stock Fairtrade products. It spread to the rest of the United Kingdom the following year. Today, Fairtrade fortnights are celebrated in several countries, most notably IrelandCanadaAustralia andNew Zealand...."

I know that the idea of fairtrade is something that has recently been coming to our attention in the United States, but I don't feel like the government or the retailers are really paying attention yet. How often do you see fairtrade products marked and on the shelf? I know I have seen a couple in the coffee aisle, and occasionally in the produce section. I know that you find fairtrade all over stores like Whole Foods, (Wild Oats), Sunflower Markets, and Trader Joe's. But what about Kroger? Smith's? Fry's? Albertson? Jewel? Safeway? Dominick's? Target? K-mart? and our obnoxious, overbearing Wal-mart? etc.  How often do you find products (not food) that are labeled as fairtrade? What about clothing? Do you even know where your clothing was made?

I have to tell you that my absolute favorite fairtrade product that I buy on a regular basis is The Mother's India Fragrance incense. It is hand rolled using the traditional masala method which uses only natural materials. It is the only incense I have ever found that I am not allergic too. There are a few places that you can find a few of the scents in the United States (and online US retailers), but for a much broader selection, check out Greater Goods in the UK. Good products, friendly people...that is what a good company should be.

By the way, Fairtrade fortnight runs from February 23 through March 8 in 2009. Find even more information about fairtrade at the Fairtrade Foundations website.

Been Busy With Cranberries & Allergies

I just started a Squidoo lens about cranberries, called Great Balls of Cranberries. I'll keep adding more information, and more recipes as time goes on, but I think it is off to a great start!
Come by, leave a comment, and tell  me what you think of it!

While you are over there, you can read through my lens about my family's food allergies and how we cope. This one also includes gluten free and vegetarian recipes. The title? Allergic to Everything
Sometimes it feels like we are, other times I think we are lucky because the best food is the stuff we get to eat all the time! Share your allergies or food problems, or any other thoughts about the lens!

How Do I Meditate?

PhotobucketI found this explanation on how to meditate in one of my email newsletters and thought I would share. It came from the Self-Dev Newsletter. I found this photo at Photobucket.com and thought it was just perfect!

So How Do I Meditate?
I have a few techniques that I use, but the most basic is simply to sit in a chair or on the floor and focus on my breathing. I use a digital timer that I set for 10 or 15 minutes.

What does it mean to focus on your breathing? Literally, focus on each breath as it enters your nose, slowly expands your lungs, and then leaves your body. Breathe naturally. If you wish, you can tailor this to your desires, such as saying silently, "I breathe in peace; I exhale stress."

This is a simple technique but very effective. Later you can become more advanced and read about hand positions (mudras), sitting positions, etc., but they are unnecessary for a successful beginning meditation practice.

What is absolutely necessary to meditate:

  • Choose a position that will respect your practice and keep you from falling asleep. Honor your body and bring integrity to your practice. Don says that "when you are in meditation, you are meeting yourself." If you were meeting someone you respect, you would likely make sure your body is clean and neat and dressed in clean clothes. You wouldn't slouch.
  • Try to meditate daily. Meditation, like learning a language, isn't for the weekend warrior. It is better to have short sessions of 5-10 minutes daily than sporadic, long sessions.
How Do I Know I'm Doing it Right?
Did you fall asleep?

Did you get up before your time was up?

Do you feel at least slightly better after meditation than you did before?

You're doing it right. The goal is to simply focus on your breathing, releasing thoughts as they come. Attempt to stay in a state of compassion and non-judgment.

New Picture on a lens!

I just uploaded a new picture to one of my most popular lenses. Pear and Parsley Green Smoothie Recipe has a new really cute intro picture. I made a green smoothie, and left it on the counter while I went to get my camera. When I came back I found this happening, and caught proof of it with a picture! Check it out!

rGBH FREE finally!

rBGH FREE!I was thrilled to read this little blurb in one of my newsletters! It may not pertain to product names that my household uses, but we certainly do know them! They are very mainstream, and we are thrilled to see companies that are so main stream finally taking a stand against the bovine growth hormone!
Yeah! Time to celebrate!

Here's the clip from the newsletter:
"Yoplait, a leading brand of yoghurt, and the 19th largest dairy producer in the U.S., has announced, that as of August 2009, it will no longer purchase milk from dairies injecting their cows with Monsanto's controversial genetically engineered synthetic hormone, recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH). Yoplait's rejection of rBGH-tainted milk comes in the wake of a consumer campaign organized by the Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, the OCA, and dozens of allied public interest organizations. Yoplait's action is amplified by a growing number of mainstream companies who have recently turned their backs on rBGH, including Starbucks, Caribou, Cabot cheese, and Subway. For over ten years, OCA and our allies have led the charge against rBGH and other genetically engineered foods and food ingredients. Although rBGH is not allowed on organic farms and is banned in most of the industrialized world because of its threats to both animal and human health, this cruel and dangerous drug is still injected into approximately 10% of U.S. dairy cows--to force them to produce more milk. With your help, OCA and its allies will continue our campaign until Monsanto's rBGH is driven completely off the market."

And , yes, I did put a Law of Attraction label on this post. It is nice to realize that when so many of us come together to stand for what is important to us, that no matter how big it is, we can create a future of our choosing!

Gray, Overcast, and Just a Little Bit Out of Focus

I think it is probably just the weather... it's raining again. We have spent the last several days swapping bath towels from around the windows and doors as they are dripping with water, and putting them through the washer and dryer. the landlord knows about all the leaks, but doesn't want to do anything about them. Too much money these days I guess... of course, I thought that was why I paid rent each month! ;-)
In addition to the rain, it is just chilly again.... And it looks like the chill is staying with us over the next ten days according to the weather maps. We are staying in the 50s and 60s for our highs, and the nights are spent in the 40s.
Go ahead, call me wimpy, but this is why I like living out here! I moved away from all these cold and rainy days 6 years ago... 32 years of Chicago weather had left me frozen to the bone, year round! One advantage to having spent the last 6 years moving to various locations within the Sonoran and Mohave deserts is that there is almost always blissful sun and warmth...at least down here in AZ.
But alas, I did say ALMOST always. The bountiful life of the desert does need to have water occasionally. And the winters really do get much colder than the summers. If you peruse through the old posts, I am sure that I mentioned the 120 degree days of summer. Some quick math... 120 degrees minus 40 degrees equals an 80 degree difference. Now think of your summers and subtract 80 degrees... just a little bit chilly huh?!

But today I am feeling a lot like the view out my window. Gray, overcast, and with the water making little streams down the window everything is just a little bit out of focus.

This is so different than the cries of last week. The baby (he may be 6 years old now, but he is still my baby!) was pleading with me to take him to the little secluded cove we found off the river bank on our walk, so we could go swimming. The other two chimed in... it was at least warm enough to go wading into the water. And then we could explore the reeds across the way. The warm breeze of spring blew over the Colorado river that  day, and we had the most wonderful walk/climb along the alternating rocky and sandy shore line. We even had a small group of ducks following us along, and we were joking that we were taking our pet mallards for a walk. (Little did the ducks know that we didn't have anything to feed them!)

Maybe that warm breeze will come back next week, or the week after. Our spring adventures will be awaiting us then....

Tough Old Bird

I use the term affectionately... the cat that I grew up with gained that title when she was around 12 years old from what I recall. The ball hip joint bone had been shattered in her back leg as a kitten just before we got her, and no one had noticed because she had been hiding. When she got used to our house and we noticed her limping, we took her to the vet. They had told us that she would run okay, but never be much of a jumper. Yet she learned to jump straight to the top of the fireplace mantle, 5 feet off the floor. She climbed trees (with no front claws), and hunted down prey just like any other great furry tailed hunter. She used to go out and beat up the tom cats that ventured into our yard... And when she was diagnosed with kidney disease and we were told she wouldn't live long...well, that's when she became "tough old bird", as she stayed with us for another 4 years or so...

Well, this time around I am using it to describe my computer. We first moved to this house in the middle of nowhere 15+ months ago. We had to hook up the computers to DSL for the first time in 8 years, and I forgot how electricity travels through the phone line.... Well, one big storm, and we had a surge come through the house, and everything attached to just that one phone jack was tweaked. The phone company denied that it could possibly be their fault. The phone company replaced their modem that was fried, the satellite company replaced the satellite box whose modem was fried, but my poor computer that was attached to the DSL modem at the time just kept chugging along in it's tweaked little manner.

A year later it was still limping along, until one day it just couldn't quite get started. It tried... it would start to get stuff running, and then it would just fall into a crumpled pile. We replaced the motherboard...which showed scorch marks where the cat 5 cable connected it to the internet... (but the phone company could't possibly be responsible -said dripping with sarcasm).

And it was back, the computer was back up and running, but seemed crippled. I put it up to the cheap motherboard I had to use because of finances at the time. And I got used to my poor crippled computer limping its way around...and then it happened again.

Last week, I said good night to my computer one night and came back to it the next morning and it wouldn't start up. I was reliving the painful experience. It tried to start, but it couldn't quite make it. And there it was in a crumpled pile of electronics on the floor. It was pitiful to look at. It sat there whimpering at its own failure.

We had suspected this would happen. The processor took the electric surge hit also, but had seemed to be working fine. It had been a tough old bird. It kept going long after it should have laid down and given up.

Knowing it might happen does not really prepare you for it. It is like losing a close friend, a long time pet.... I mourn the loss of my computer. We built it 6 years ago. We used some of the newest technology at that time. We joked that it was so fast that it could almost keep up with me. ALMOST... computers are just not as good as the human brain. I have still never met a computer that can keep up with my multi tasking and speed. but it was a great computer, and I accomplished so much on it.

I could simply replace the processor, but it has been six years. Technology has moved on, and my top of the line stuff is now third generation. It is time to build a new computer. Of course I can rescue the hard drive with all the information (most of it was backed up anyways), but that doesn't bring back my computer. The spark of life that was its personality, that just seemed to adapt to me. (Yeah, I know, that was probably me adapting to it....) But, I will miss my computer.

For now, I will commandeer one of the kids computers to earn the money to buy the new parts for mine... and I will leave my tower sitting near my desk while I mourn the loss of my computer. (After all, it makes a great end table!)
